Abstract for presentation at ALIA National Library and Information Technicians Conference 2007

A Training Framework for the Library Industry

  • Tim Harrington, Jobs Plus, Australia
  • Genevieve Wearne, Verve - knowledge & skills, Australia
  • Verve – knowledge & skills, the Victorian industry training advisory body for the culture (including libraries) and recreation industries supports the need for traineeships in the libraries sector. Verve’s research indicates that there may be a significant skills shortage in the sector within the next five to ten years with the industry dominated by an ageing workforce. A traineeship model will allow a new generation of library workers to be mentored and to gain a practical understanding of library operations and organisational culture. As careers in libraries have evolved into a diverse range of roles and sectors, it is important to present clear information to both employers and those considering a career in the library sector about library traineeships, how they can be set up and the opportunities that they can provide.

Verve is developing training models in association with Jobs Plus, an Australian Apprenticeships Service and various industry groups, including Training Providers and Employers.
