Abstract for presentation at ALIA National Library and Information Technicians Conference 2007

Investigate, Innovate and Implement: A Case Study of OH&S at RMIT University Library, Bundoora

  • Mrs Robyn Phillips, RMIT University, Australia
  • In this short talk, Robyn identifies examples of health and safety issues in the workplace and how to solve them with innovative and practical changes. Issues in service delivery, examples of service desks, study spaces, returned items processing and lighting in an academic library are discussed as a case study.

In looking at how change can be initiated, collaboration consultation and compromise all play a part. From interaction with staff, committees, managers, and consultation with experts, investigating alternative solutions can be a challenge. Discussing the process of how this was achieved and illustrating with ‘before’ and ‘after’ visuals, this talk presents the outcomes of new lighting, returns area, service desks and study spaces which incorporated solutions to OH&S issues. The resulting changes have been positive for both staff and students using the Library

This talk is intended for anyone interested in, or new to OH&S in libraries and aims to encourage the audience to investigate innovative solutions for implementation in their own library.
