The LIS Training Library at Canberra Institute of Technology
Objectives:
To outline/describe the new CIT LIS Training Library and place it within the context of student centered learning and the successful practice firm pedagogy. The operation of the Training Library will be explained with particular reference to a number of units of competency at the Certificate III level including; CULLB206B Assist with circulation services & CULLB205B Process and Maintain Information Resources. The CIT Training Library is the first of its kind in Australia.
Background:
The CIT LIS Training Library provides a realistic work place environment in which to educate students and facilitate the learning process. This is achieved by providing a practical and experiential environment for students enrolled in the Library and Information Services programs at CIT. The new Training Library both complements and prepares students for the two work placements that they currently undertake in libraries around Canberra. Competencies are achieved in a holistic manner as students muti-skill through technical and client service areas. A large component of the delivery of the CIT Library and Information Services suite of programs, starting with Certificate III and IV offerings, will progressively move to a more flexible, student-centred, work-based focus using this new facility which represents Vocational Education and Training (VET) ‘best practice’ pedagogy.
The purpose of the Training Library is:
• To deliver a holistic environment that replicates the functions and procedures of an actual working library;
• To provide students with an environment where they are able to become skilled at, and complete tasks that would be performed as part of a Library technician’s role; and
• To provide students with actual ‘practical work experience’ to facilitate their potential employability in the workplace.
Intended Outcomes:
To both inform and stimulate thought and debate in the profession with regard to appropriate teaching and learning environments for library technician students emphasizing holistic, student centered practical delivery strategies.
Intended Audience:
Library Technicians, Librarians, students of LIS and any persons interested in innovative teaching and learning environments.
Activities for Participants:
• Viewing of Power point presentation
• Discussion and questions.
