Abstract for presentation at ALIA National Library and Information Technicians Conference 2007

Just Like a Gentleman’s Club? Club Libraries in the 21st Century

  • Lisa Sukkel, RACV Club, Australia
  • Club libraries have had a long and important role in library history, both in England and Australia. Such library services are not, however, normally considered as part of the spectrum of contemporary library service. Lisa Sukkel, Club Librarian for the newly created RACV Club Library, will report on how a “new” club library provides service to members, noting both the similarities and differences with other library services, such as those of public and special libraries. She will also report on her research currently being undertaken on other club libraries around the world, reporting on how the RACV experience differs from many other club collections and what that may mean for other “new” club collections. The session will conclude by discussing how “club” libraries can contribute to raising information literacy among Victorians.
