Current and Emerging Trends in Cataloguing
The recent ever-expanding growth of information and information technology has forced significant change upon the theory and especially the practices of cataloguing. Cataloguers cooperate on a global basis to unify cataloguing standards, rules, and practices that enable the global sharing of information resources. This paper presents an overview of current and emerging trends in cataloguing brought about by increasing volumes and multiple formats of information as well as changing user expectations and behaviours. To pursue professional ethics in creating timely and high quality records, cataloguers have developed a new mindset to deal with the increased complexity. Current and emerging trends in cataloguing include the use of an increasing number of online tools, the management of materials in new formats, providing multilingual options, developing metadata schemes, metadata creation, extraction, and manipulation, and cataloguing for diverse user environments and audiences.
