Books Behind Bars II
At the 11th ALIA National Library Technicians Conference Kevin presented a paper titled ‘Books Behind Bars’, which related to the provision of library services to inmates of the NSW Department of Corrective Services. In the intervening 6 years there has been a total restructure of the library services in the Department that has resulted in a number of significant changes. This included the appointment of a Manager, Library Services to oversee all the correctional center libraries. This new structure has resulted in a centrally managed service including greater control of library material, central purchasing of material, the training of inmate library clerks. All these initiatives have led to improved information services for inmates. In this paper Kevin will detail the implementation of these changes and compare current provision of library and information services to those available 6 years ago.
